Drafting in Sydney: Should I renovate or demolish Part 1 - Cost
Before you start doing any work, it may be worth doing some research about your house. If the existing house is in a poor condition structurally, it may be wiser to completely demolishing and building afresh as it may be cheaper and easier than trying to repair existing parts of the house.
It is not uncommon that repairing major structural damage and sourcing the right kinds of materials can be very costly to give a positive overall quality. Not only that, it may be complicated and labour intensive – and hence a lot of builders and contractors may charge "an arm and leg" to get the work done properly. You’ll need to be prepared for the possibility that you’ll uncover more big problems as you go.
Though, if your existing house is in a good condition structural but just some parts and spaces that do not fit out needs, then a renovation/ extension may do a better job. Extensions are generally cheaper if the existing structural is sound. Just be sure that you understand what’s involved, plan carefully and make sure there’s plenty of wriggle room in your budget.
